Apply for a taxi/private hire car driving licence

Use this form if you need a licence to drive a taxi and a private hire car.

Applications require payment online at the end of this form, using a credit/debit card, and are non-refundable.

What you will need:

  • Previous licence information
  • current DVLA driving licence
  • DVLA licence summary
  • recent passport-type photograph
  • Credit/debit card details

New tax checks from 2nd October 2023

The UK Government has created tax requirements for applications for particular licences across the UK. From 2nd October, tax checks will be required for a taxi driver's licence.

For most applications, you will simply need to confirm that you are aware of your HMRC tax obligations. There will be some circumstances, however, when a 9-character tax code will be required. You will need to add this to your application form, for:

  • All renewals
  • New applications where the licence has expired, or was revoked, within the last year
  • New applications where you have the same licence with another licensing authority
