UPDATE: Sunday, January 26 at 11.30am
The situation in Fife is improving following Friday’s storms.
However please continue to take care on the roads as our teams are clearing trees and debris.
Some people are still without power.
SP Energy Networks are offering hotel accommodation for those people still without power. Please call 105 as soon as possible if you need this help from them or you can book a hotel yourself, and they will refund the cost up to £200. Please keep all receipts for reimbursement.
Some council facilities are open today as warm spaces offering sandwiches and hot drinks:
In Kirkcaldy, Balwearie HS is open until 2pm
In Glenrothes, the Lomond Centre is open until 2pm
In Leven, Levenmouth Academy is open until 2pm and the Savoy Centre is open until 2.15pm
In Cupar, the Corn Exchange is open 2pm – 6pm
Communities in Auchtertool will open their village hall today if needed
Craigrothie village hall will also open today as a warm space if needed. Contact the chair of the hall committee if you need support.
Kirkcaldy Galleries and Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries are also open.
We're doing our best to catch up on bin collections but if we have not picked up the bins that were supposed to be collected on Friday, by 5pm today (Sunday), please take them back in and present on your next collection day. Any additional waste will also be collected at that time.
Methil Recycling Centre will remain closed today.
We expect all our schools to be open as normal tomorrow with the exception of Donibristle PS which has suffered damage to its roof and Glenwood HS which has problems with heating. Parents will be contacted directly if there are any issues with schools opening.
UPDATE: Saturday, January 25 at 5pm
Methil Recycling Centre:
Lochore Meadows:
The Willie Clarke Visitor Centre is closed without power. There are numerous fallen trees within the park and our teams have been out surveying damage and making things as safe as possible.
We would urge people not to venture out for a walk in the country park due to the risk of further trees coming down. There are also very dangerous power lines down on the Pit Road which have been reported to Scottish Power, so please avoid the area.
UPDATE: Saturday, January 25 at 12 noon
The cleanup after the storms yesterday is well underway but there is still some disruption across Fife.
Unfortunately Methil Recycling Centre has had to remain closed today due to a fallen tree. All other recycling centres scheduled to open today are open.
Some roads are still closed, and teams are out clearing trees and debris https://www.fife.gov.uk/closures
Please take care if you’re out and about as the roads will take some time to clear.
We expect all schools to open as normal on Monday. However Donibristle Primary School will be closed due to roof damage. Our janitors are going out to all schools today to check on any damage. Parents will be contacted directly if any schools are unable to open on Monday.
There are still some homes without power and SPEN are working to get power restored. Scottish Power have also provided food trucks at Fluthers car park, Cupar and Blairhall Community Centre this morning (check their website for up-to-date details).
Some community centres are open across Fife as warm spaces. Hot rolls and drinks are also being provided at High Valleyfield Community Centre. If you can, please check on vulnerable neighbours if you know they are without power.

Friday, January 24 at 7pm
Storm Eowyn is continuing to cause disruption and damage across Fife.
Advice from Police Scotland right now (Friday evening) is not to travel and SP Energy Networks are dealing with a number of power outages.
A number of roads across Fife have been affected. There are lots of trees down and our tree squads are working flat out to try to keep roads clear. However this may take some time, so please be patient while we work to get the network up and running again, and take care if you’re out and about over the weekend.
We are confident the majority of schools will be open as normal on Monday. However, we are also aware that some buildings, including schools, have suffered some damage. These will be assessed over the weekend and parents will be contacted directly if there are any issues with schools re-opening on Monday.
Bin collections will also resume over the weekend but if we have not picked up the bins that were supposed to be collected on Friday, by 5pm on Sunday, please take them back in and present on your next collection day. Any additional waste will also be collected at that time.
Recycling centres are expected to open tomorrow (Saturday) but will open an hour later than normal to allow any clean up to be carried out. Please check before travelling.
Our street cleaning teams will be out and about over the weekend to start the clean-up operation and help get Fife back to normal.
In the meantime stay safe and please continue to follow guidance and advice:
- Police Scotland travel advice updated 3pm Friday
- Met Office warnings and advice
- SP Energy Networks severe weather update
Scottish Government: Response to Storm Éowyn - gov.scot
Thursday, January 23
Red and amber weather warnings are in place for Fife on Friday 24 January, 2025.
Very strong winds of 80 – 90mph associated with Storm Éowyn are predicted which could cause dangerous conditions and significant disruption throughout the day on Friday.
Schools:
- All Fife schools and nurseries will be closed on Friday 24 January.
- Schools will be in touch with families directly on what remote learning will be available.
- Schools will reopen on Monday 27 January.
Bin collections:
- There will be no bin collections on Friday 24 January. Instead, put bins out on the kerbside for collection from 7am on Saturday 25 January when we will try to catch up with Friday's missed collections over the weekend instead. If we have not serviced the bins by 5pm on Sunday, please take back in and present on your next collection day. We will uplift any additional bags for properties affected.
- There will be no bulky uplifts across Fife on Friday 24 January. Any bulky uplift requests will have to be re-booked.
- Recycling centres will also be closed on Friday 24 January.
Other council services:
- All Fife Council funeral services for Friday 24 January have been cancelled.
- All Fife Customer Service Centres will be closed on Friday 24 January and registration appointments will not be available.
- Community centres will be closed.
Critical services including meals on wheels and home care services will continue to be provided.
Fife Council’s Chief Executive Ken Gourlay said: "This level of warning is serious and relatively rare. Very severe weather and travel problems are expected throughout the school day tomorrow so we have taken the decision to close all of Fife's schools, not just those in the red weather warning area.
"We're doing what we can to keep people safe and will still be out and about tomorrow protecting the most vulnerable. We'll also be preparing for any clean-up action that's required afterwards."
