Dunfermline World War 1 Memorial

The World War (WW)1 Memorial is located on Monastery Street in Dunfermline’s Heritage Quarter. The Category-C listed memorial was originally funded by local people to mark a significant event in the history of Dunfermline, affecting thousands of local families. There remains a great sense of civic pride linked with the memorial, which was originally unveiled 100 years ago, on 26 September 1925.

The WW1 Memorial includes a large cenotaph with wing walls on a platform.

Listed Building Consent was granted on 2 August 2024 to carry out the following works:

  • Raking out and repointing of all mortar joints with lime mortar
  • Removing vegetation and their roots from the mortar joints
  • Cleaning and refinishing the lead plaques
  • Soft touch cleaning of the Cullalo sandstone including treatment of the white/blue stain below lead plaques
  • Take down and rebuild the damaged stone boundary wall, using lime mortar.
  • Replacing damaged copes and ornate railings
  • Crack repairs/indents, removal of vegetation/roots and lime mortar re-pointing to open joints on elevation of boundary wall facing park
  • Erect scaffolding to provide access for all repairs as well as fall protection
  • Repainting all railings
  • Replacing the damaged slabs directly in front of the memorial

On 19 March 2025, West Fife Area Common Good Sub-Committee agreed to contribute £195,000 towards repairing and refurbishing the WW1 Memorial.

Planning is underway, for a civic re-dedication ceremony on Tuesday 7 October 2025, to mark the Centenary of the memorial’s unveiling.

World War 2 Memorial

Dunfermline WW2 memorial

The WW2 Memorial is located on Monastery Street – the opposite side of the street to the WW1 Memorial and adjacent to Dunfermline Abbey. The Category-C listed memorial was originally unveiled on 9 August 1953 and re-dedicated on 4 March 2011. The WW2 memorial comprises a raised platform with parapet walls and until recently, a lantern or eternal flame.

We applied for Listed Building Consent on 19 March 2025 to replace the eternal flame light fitting and clean the WW2 Memorial. We’re awaiting the decision.
