Council moves to protect most vulnerable from charges

Council Leader David Ross

Fife Council's Cabinet Committee has agreed to reject introducing any charges for day care services for older people.

Councillors were discussing the annual increase in charges for social care services including meals on wheels and community alarms. Fife's Health and Social Care Partnership provides and purchases a range of social care services to meet the needs of people across Fife. Income from charges are used to offset the cost of providing the services.

However a suggestion to introduce charges for day care services and telecare equipment was rejected by councillors.

Council Leader David Ross commented: "The impact this would have had on some of the most vulnerable people in our communities was not acceptable.

"We've agreed that instead we will offset any potential loss of funding for the Health and Social Care Partnership by £0.595m this year.

"There's no doubt that there are challenges ahead but, for this year we have managed to protect people from the financial impact that these charges would bring."
