Summer of fun and activity in South and West Fife

Children, young people and families are all set to take part in a summer of fun in South and West Fife this year, with the help of a programme of activities for children, young people and families.

South and West Fie Area Committee today agreed to award £18,000 from the Local Community Planning budget and £18,000 from area budgets to support a range of activities this summer. The aim is to help young people and their families get out and about and keep active through the holidays.

Convenor of the South and West Fie Area Committee, Cllr David Barratt, said: “For many families it’s just not possible to afford the extra costs necessary to keep their children occupied for seven weeks in the summer.

“This full programme of activities, which will be free to all children, young people and families, will have something for everyone to keep young ones happy through the holidays.”

The summer programme will be delivered by Fife Council Community Development, Community Use Schools, Active Schools, Family Support Service, along with Fife Gingerbread and local management committees. All activities will have hot and/or cold meals as part of their engagement.

Some activities include:

  • Universal Youth Work - will take place over five of the seven weeks school holidays. This will provide each area and age group with one session per week in North Queensferry, Inverkeithing, Rosyth and the West Fife Villages. There will be a mix of daytime and some evening activities
  • EASYP/Next Steps –delivered over five weeks in the summer which will see young people exploring unfamiliar places in a safe environment. Plans include visits out of Fife to Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow, V&A in Dundee and Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.
  • Summer at The Wing – this year there will be activities on for young people throughout all seven weeks of the school holidays. Activities range from Active School sports camps, Water Confidence Swimming courses, Primary 7 School Transition events, arts and craft weekly sessions as well as public swimming and sport sessions.
  • Summer Family Fun Roadshows - four roadshow events throughout South and West Fife. Each session will run between 11am – 2pm. Activities on offer will include:- * Defibrillator Awareness * Sewing classes * Balloon modelling * Facepainting * Air Fryer cooking * Outdoor sports * Nature walk * Bookbug sessions * Circus skills * Live music performances from the ‘Mates Make Music Group’
  • Bring the Brood – a whole family activity project that runs for two hours per week where families have the opportunity to cook together, play games and take part in other activities like arts and crafts. The sessions take place at The Wing.

There will also be an opportunity for families to engage in ‘taster’ sessions of the mainstream adult learning programme with the intention of signing up new adult learners.
