Shoppers in Kirkcaldy will be able to park for up to one hour for free in the heart of the town centre from 1 October.
The changes, which will see the removal of the on-street parking charges between Kirk and Oswald’s Wynds in the Merchant’s Quarter of the town, are in response to feedback from local traders and were agreed by members of the Kirkcaldy Area Committee earlier this year (June 2024).
Convener of the Kirkcaldy area committee, Councillor Ian Cameron said: “We’re committed to listening to what people tell us and parking is definitely a topic that many of us are contacted about as local members.
“We’ve introduced a number of initiatives over the last few years to encourage people back into the town centre. These include discounted parking rates and discount season tickets for those who work in Kirkcaldy, so I’m pleased we’re in a position to now remove the on-street parking charges right in the heart of the town centre. Hopefully, by giving people a place to park for free for an hour, it will encourage a turnover of shoppers to the high street and local businesses.”
The parking charges will be removed for 18 months when it’ll be reviewed, and a decision taken whether to make this a permanent change.
Although the parking bays will be free for one hour, Monday to Saturday, they will be subject to a maximum stay of 60 minutes, with no return within one hour. Parking Attendants will continue to patrol the area. There will be no time limits on Sunday’s.
