Talking about the new "South West Fife secondary school, which will relocate the current Inverkeithing High School" is quite a mouthful. But not for too much longer, as counciillors have today agreed the process for naming the new school.
As the first stage of the process, members of the South and West Fife Area Committee have given permission for a widespread consultation, which will be seeking suggestions for a name for the relocated school. This consultation will involve pupils and staff from all the associated schools, as well as an online form which can be filled in by members of the public.
Those suggestions will be collated and presented back to the Area committee which will create a shortlist of names, for a further consultation to see which suggestion or suggestions are most popular. Elected members will then make a final decision on the name at the Area Committee in April.
Cllr David Barratt, Convenor of South and West Fife Area Committee said: “Naming anything, especially a school is quite an emotive subject and we know there will be a lot of different opinions in the community. That’s why we want to gather as many suggestions as possible, especially from the young people who will be attending the new school. They’re going to be hearing and using the name for a long time so we want it to mean something for them. Schooly McSchool Face is not going to cut it here.
“We want to hear from all voices in the local community so please go online and make your suggestion by 22nd January 2025 if you want to have it considered.”
This form is available on the website at New SW Fife High School - Inverkeithing High School replacement | Fife Council from 12th December 2024.
Meanwhile, construction is well underway on the new school, with some of the steel structure in place already.
This includes one of the school’s unique design features – a steel representation of the Forth Rail Bridge, incorporated into the structure of the building. The steel has been coated in the iconic Forth Rail Bridge red as a nod to, what is arguably, Fife and Scotland's most famous landmark. The structure will be visible both inside and outside the school and in certain parts of the building, you’ll be able to see the actual bridges and the internal bridge in the same view.
