The Donald Fountain once the work was completed and the moss and dead planting was clearedThe Unpaid Work Team have been working hard to clean up the area around the Donald Fountain in Dunfermline Public Park. Dunfermline Community Council put in a request for the team to carry out this work.

The area around the fountain had not been thoroughly cleaned for some time. While the planting was cleared, the paving had embedded moss and dirt and the area was looking rather sad.

The drinking fountain, inaugurated 22 October 1887, was manufactured by Robert Donald, the then Provost of Dunfermline. In 1986 it was moved to its current position to make way for the dual carriageway.

Two teams: two supervisors and 14 service users, spent over 2 days on site completely overhauling the area. The work included clearing the old planting and cleaning the surrounding paving and the stairs up to it. The workers took a real pride in completing this project and bringing the whole area around the fountain back to life.

Fiona Simpson, Secretary of Central Dunfermline Community Council was very appriciative of this and other work saying 'Many thanks again for arranging the work on the fountain and for clearing the area under the Glen Bridge.'

Community Payback Unpaid Work Scheme is an alternative to a custodial sentence. It can be anything from 40 to 300 hours of unpaid work. The Unpaid Work Team is funded through the Criminal Justice budget. Visibility of the works carried out plays a major role in the success of this scheme.
