South Street, St Andrews

The responses to a recent public consultation about the street layout in South Street, St Andrews, have now been shared. The project, led by Stantec on behalf of Fife Council, was carried out 30 November 2022 - 11 January 2023 and gathered local views on any changes people would like to see to make it a more vibrant and welcoming 'place' for citizens, traders and visitors.

Over 1,000 responses to the online questionnaire were received, supported by about 50 paper copies of the questionnaire.  Around 300 comments were also submitted during local public events as people gave their consideration to creating a space in which people can enjoy a safe, welcoming, greener and attractive outdoor streetscape to congregate, use local amenities, walk, wheel or cycle.

Initial results show that 58% of respondents are in favour of keeping all or some of the changes made to street layouts during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The changes allowed outdoor seating areas for local bars and restaurants. To do this some parking places were removed to make way. The outdoor areas have proven to be very popular, but some concerns were raised over the loss of parking spaces. However, only 44 spaces have been taken from a total of 2,141 in the town, which is a 2% reduction.

A report on the consultation will be put to councillors in April.
