Fife celebrates 30 years of school meals

FIFE Council celebrated 30 years of National Schools Meal Week with children at St Brides RC Primary School in Cowdenbeath and catering staff and pupils at Waid Academy, Anstruther.

Councillors were invited for lunch at nearby Anstruther Primary to highlight and celebrate catering staff who work hard to provide nutritious choices daily for children in our schools across Fife.

All children in P1-P5 can receive a free school meal, and with Christmas on the way, families are being encouraged to save on packed lunches and take up the offer of free school meals if they have children in P1 to P5.

Spokesperson for Education, Cllr. Cara Hilton who took up the offer of school lunch in Anstruther Primary said,

“Our menus provide a balanced diet over the week and there really is something for all tastes, whether you have children with special dietary requirements or  children who just prefer a plainer option.

“As well as a range of cooked meals, there are healthy packed-lunch options – filled rolls, sandwiches and wraps.  A Fife school lunch provides at least one third of the daily nutritional requirements of pupils.”

“We’ll continue to work hard to make sure that children and young people have access to healthy and nourishing meals so that they are fully able to learn, play, and engage with their peers and communities."

You can download the Fife school meals menu and read more about school meals including menu information, ingredients and allergens at www.fife.gov.uk/schoolmeals.

Parents and carers of children in primary six and seven and those with a young person in high school may be eligible for free school meals.  Those who qualify can apply for free school meals using this form.
