A School Exclusion Zone (also known as a School Street) is to prevent non-residential traffic from using the road network outside a school. Normally, the restriction will be for the entrance gate and/or in surrounding streets. It's for set periods of the school day, typically during start and finish times.
The restriction of vehicles is only operational when lights are activated on the entry sign. The restriction is enforceable and disobeying the restrictions can result in prosecution.
The aims of a School Exclusion Zone (SEZ) are to encourage more active travel to school and to improve road safety in the area immediately outside the school.
They are not introduced to tackle issues with parking over driveways or to improve parking availability for residents.
The council trialled School Exclusion Zones (SEZ) at three pilot locations in Fife. The trials have concluded with only one site remaining operational for a further temporary period to gather more data.
