Proposed layout changes
Stage status: Public consultation complete
The council is considering making some changes to South Street, aimed at making the street a more vibrant and welcoming ‘place’ for citizens, traders and visitors. Our St Andrews South Street - proposed layout changes page gives more information
During November 2022, we appointed Stantec as an independent consultant, to carry out public engagement surveys and events. They provided supporting information, conceptual design plans, and images for South Street.
The project team hopes to create a space in which people can enjoy a welcoming, ‘greener’, and attractive outdoor space. It will be an area to socialise and use local amenities, whilst also supporting walking, wheeling or cycling.
The consultation was carried out between 30th November 2022 and 11th January 2023. Over 1,000 responses to the online questionnaire were received, supported by about 50 paper copies of the questionnaire and about 300 comments submitted during events.
The outcome of the questionnaire indicated that 42% of respondents wanted the interventions removed, compared to 46% in favour of keeping the interventions. In addition, 12% were in favour of keeping some of the interventions. In summary, 58% of respondents were in favour of keeping all or some of the interventions, versus 42% against keeping them.
It is noted that footfall on South Street decreased significantly during 2020 and 2021, as a result of Covid-19. However, footfall levels in 2022 are very nearly back to 2019 (pre-Covid) levels.
