Stage status: Conception
This proposed route will connect Wormit and Newport, with potential future links to Tay Bridgehead. It will provide access for pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians and people using scooters, wheelchairs or pushchairs.
The potential route will connect many key destinations in the area:
- Newport Primary School
- Waterstone Crooks Sports Centre
- Wormit Primary School
It will provide access to green space and parkland. It will use a combination of traffic-free paths and some quiet, local roads. We want to make it easier for people to travel, making journeys for leisure, commuting and shopping trips.
The local community asked for the link, and Fife Council produced a discussion paper for key stakeholders in September 2021. The route design is being part funded by Sustrans and project managed by Fife Council. The preferred design is to build a 3-metre-wide shared use path, where space permits, with good access for all abilities.
The initial section will be between Wormit Primary School and Newport Primary School. A potential route already exists, along the ‘nature trail’. Thereafter, attention will focus on the section from Newport to Tay Bridgehead. At present, there are a few suitable options for this section. Some adjacent areas have been zoned for housing development in Fife Council’s Local Plan. We expect to create shared use paths as part of any development.
Key features:
- A shared use path for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelers and equestrians, combined with the use of quiet roads
- Creation of ramps in key locations to reduce gradient and avoid steps
- Signage added to on-road sections of the route
- Consider creation of zebra crossings or parallel zebra crossings where the route crosses a road
Timeline:
- March/April 2023 - community engagement
- Summer 2023 - potential ‘early start’ construction projects
- 2023/24 – continued liaison with Sustrans regarding funding applications, leading to further construction works
Distance: Approximately 2.5km from Wormit to Newport
Approximate infrastructure investment: The early start construction works are likely to be about £50,000. The whole route between Wormit and Tay Bridgehead will cost around £2.4m.
