National Cycle Route 76 (Dalgety Bay to Aberdour section)

Stage status: Construction

National Cycle Route 76 is between Dalgety Bay and Aberdour. It forms part of the ‘Round the Forth’ active travel route. This connects many of Fife’s coastal towns and villages:  Kincardine in the west, to Kirkcaldy further along the coast to the east, where it meets National Cycle Route 766.

The Dalgety Bay to Aberdour section acts an essential alternative to walking or cycling on the nearby A921. Currently, there are no other roads running parallel between these towns. The existing path width generally ranges from 3m to 4m, and has been popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and horse-riders. Unfortunately, during the last 20 years, the condition of the path has deteriorated and the track now requires to be reconstructed.

We will rebuild and upgrade the path to a modern standard. We will do this by:

  • improving the path sub-structure
  • widening the path, where necessary, so there is a consistent width of 4m
  • improving the drainage
  • clearing sightlines and improving amenity provision. Examples of this could be seating for those with mobility disabilities and new signing/lining

We know that the existing shared unsegregated use of the path has caused some issues between pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists sometimes pass too close, or too fast, past pedestrians. We propose to segregate cyclists from pedestrians by installing a white line, or other dividing material, down the centre of the track. Signs will be erected to ensure it is clear which side cyclists should be riding on and which side is for pedestrians. The signing will have white cycle logos, marked on the surface.

Timeline: Construction is scheduled to start during November 2022

Distance: 2.7km

Approximate infrastructure investment: £300,000
