Kelty to Cowdenbeath Active Travel Corridor

Stage status: Phases 1 to 3 - Complete; Phase 4 - Construction

The towns of Kelty and Cowdenbeath are a little over 2km apart. This is an ideal distance for travel by active modes of transport such as cycling or walking. The two communities have many trip generators, such as:

  • schools
  • shops
  • transport links
  • community centres
  • leisure centres, and
  • outdoor spaces, including the nearby Lochore Meadows Country Park

In 2018, a feasibility study looked at the potential to develop an active travel corridor between Kelty and Cowdenbeath. More recently, preliminary design work was undertaken for phase 4. This will be from the Lochore Meadows access road to the Fife Council boundary.

Phases 1 to 3 have been completed, from the Lochore Meadows access road in Kelty, to the Lochgelly Road roundabout in Cowdenbeath. This can be seen on the Location Plan. The route follows the A909, so it is easily accessed from many of Kelty’s residential roads. In Cowdenbeath, the route joins the Cowdenbeath to Lochgelly active travel corridor (B981). This is less than half a mile from the town centre. Other local paths are nearby.

The active travel corridor has a new off-carriageway shared pedestrian/cycle track. This replaces the existing on-road cycle lanes. The new track will be approximately 3.0m wide, with a buffer zone between the shared pedestrian/cycle track and the carriageway. At some locations, the track may narrow slightly due to local constraints. For most of the rural section, the track is on the east side of the road, but crosses to the west side in Cowdenbeath, via a new toucan crossing.
