School Travel Plans in Fife

We are committed to ensuring that every child can travel to and from school safely, sustainably, and with ease. Our School Travel Planning initiative is designed to support schools, parents, and communities in developing effective travel strategies that promote healthier lifestyles, reduce environmental impact, and enhance road safety.

Why does School Travel Planning matter?

The journey to school is an important part of the day for thousands of pupils across Fife. It could be by walking, cycling/scooting, using public transport or travelling by car. How pupils commute to school has a direct impact on their health, well-being and academic performance. Our goal is to make these journeys as accessible, enjoyable and environmentally friendly as possible.

Our Key Focus Areas (FACT)

  • Fun – Turning a routine journey into something engaging and a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends
  • Active – Encouraging the use of Active Travel like walking, cycling/scooting, and public transport when travelling to school
  • Congestion – Reducing the amount of congestion outside our school gates. It improves the air quality around our schools. therefore benefiting our children’s health. It also makes it a more enjoyable experience for all.
  • Teamwork - Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. We engage with pupils, parents, teachers, and local communities to create tailored travel plans that reflect the unique needs and challenges of each school.

We are proud of the progress schools across Fife have made in creating safer and more sustainable travel environments. There is still more to do and our FACT groups (Frankie’s Active Campaigners Team) within schools are working extremely hard to make positive and long-lasting changes.
