On the housing list - what can I do?

If you have applied for housing, you are now on the Fife Housing Register.

There are four key stages when we will need to contact each other:

1. Change of circumstances

You must tell us if your circumstances change, as this may affect your points.

You can do this by:

Some changes could have an impact on your points or the number of bedrooms you are entitled to. We may ask you to provide further information or complete Supplementary Housing forms. This is to enable us to make a full update to your application.

You will also need to ensure your contact details are up to date. If we are unable to contact you, we will assume you no longer need housing.

We view all applications in the same way. We award you points and a category based on the information in your application form. If your circumstances change, your points and category can change.

We will place you in the category where you have the highest points.

The categories are:

  • Urgent Housing Needs
  • Poor Housing Circumstances
  • Lack of Security
  • Social and Medical Needs
  • Management Needs
  • No Immediate Needs

If you're in the same situation as another applicant, we will award you the same points.

We will send you a letter with your points and the category that you're in. We do this every time there is a significant update to your application.

2. The annual review letter

Once a year, we write to you to ask if you want to stay on the housing list. It’s important that you respond to this letter, to make sure you stay on the list. All details of what you need to do and how to contact us can be found in the letter.

If you ignore this letter, we’ll assume you no longer need housing.

3. Withdrawing your application

You may no longer need housed by the Fife Housing Partnership. You may have found another housing option. If this is the case, you should withdraw your application. You can do this by:

If your housing needs change, you can always apply again in the future.

4. Allocation

If you match to a property, we’ll contact you.

Demand for housing in Fife is very high with limited availability. You may wait a long time to be housed by the Fife Housing Partnership.

We encourage you to explore all options that are available. You may want to fill in another Housing Options Plan.

If none of the options above apply to you, please do not contact us. We can not fast-track your application form; we view all applications in the same way. We award you points and a category based on the information in your application form.

If you are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, please visit our Homeless prevention page.

Mutual exchange

If you're currently on the waiting list for another home, you may want to consider a mutual exchange, also known as a 'home swap'. A mutual exchange would mean neither of you need to go back on the FHR list. You would swap homes and each takes up the new tenancy.

Visit our Mutual exchange page for more information.
