When a relationship breaks down, parents and carers decide on the care of the child(ren). In many cases, arrangements are made on a voluntary basis with no need to involve legal agencies.
When domestic abuse has been a feature of the relationship, informal arrangements may not be appropriate or safe, In this case, the victim may wish to seek advice. There is a very real risk to victims of domestic abuse, which can increase during or shortly after separating from an abusive partner.
