Deaf communication service

Fife Council Deaf Communication Service provides a range of advice, support and equipment for people with a hearing loss. This includes people who are Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, deaf-blind and Deaf BSL users.

We provide advice, support and information to carers, families and professionals in relation to deafness. This includes workplace assessments for employees with a hearing loss.

We can advise and provide appropriate communication support for meetings: for example BSL Interpreters, Electronic Note Takers, Hands-On (tactile) Interpreters and Lip-Speakers. British Sign Language taster sessions and Deaf Awareness sessions can be booked on CLMS for Fife Council Employees.

BSL Plan for Fife

The British Sign Language (Scotland) Act 2015 was given Royal Assent in October 2015. The purpose of the Act is to promote the use of British Sign Language (B.S.L.) as a recognised language in Scotland. The Act places a responsibility on local authorities to produce a local B.S.L. plan which details the actions each authority will take to achieve the Scottish Government's long term goals. Fife Council has been working closely with partner agencies and people who communicate through B.S.L. as their first language to produce Fife's British Sign Language Plan.
