Some children need extra help at nursery or school for many different reasons. We describe these reasons as ‘additional support needs’.
Around 30% of children will have additional support needs at some point in their time at nursery or school.
The adults who make decisions about education within Fife Council have created a plan to help children with additional needs to have the best experience possible.
Before we made the plan…
- we listened to what pupils, their parents and carers, and education staff said about what is working well and what is not
- we thought about our hopes and dreams for children with additional support needs
- we read about what other parts of Scotland are doing to help children with additional support needs
Our vision
Children with additional support needs will have really good opportunities to play and learn in their local nursery or school, or a more specialist school if they need it. The staff who support them will have the chance to learn new skills to look after and teach them well.
Our priorities for 2023-26 are to:
- Make sure the ASL Strategy is easy for everyone to access and understand
- Keep gathering the views of the people the strategy affects: pupils, their families and staff
- When we make decisions, we do it at the most local level possible, and we are open about why we made those decisions
- Education staff have all the information, training and support from services they need to best support the children and young people they work with
