SCHOOL ETHOS

The starting point for learning in our school is a positive ethos and climate of respect and trust based upon shared values across our school community.

All members of staff contribute through:

• open, positive, supportive relationships where our children feel that they are listened to
• promoting a climate in which our children feel safe and secure.
• modelling behaviour which promotes effective learning and wellbeing within our   school and nursery centre
• being sensitive and responsive to each child's wellbeing.

Our children are encouraged to contribute to the life and work of our school and from the earliest stages, to exercise their responsibilities as members of our school community.

In our School we aim to:

• provide an appropriate and stimulating curriculum which ensures our pupils achieve the highest possible standards according to their ability;
• raise levels of pupil attainment through assessment and monitoring of pupil performance, identifying development needs and providing broad and balanced opportunities for all pupils;
• provide the highest quality of learning and teaching by providing experiences that enable children to enjoy their education, through a variety of teaching approaches and learning styles;
• provide effective support systems which underpin academic achievement and promote personal and social development by promoting self-worth, confidence and esteem, whilst taking consideration and respect for other people and property, through developing responsible behaviour and self-discipline;
• create a welcoming atmosphere with a positive ethos where there is a safe, relaxed and secure teaching/learning environment, and where individuals are valued and contributions recognised with the school and wider community working together;
• improve the quality of learning and teaching by ensuring the effectiveness of staff through CPD and Review opportunities, effective management and organisation of the school’s resources;
• Ensure that the school’s promoted staff provide high-quality of leadership, management and support by building a strong team, promoting self-evaluation as a means of development, and taking account of local, and national initiatives and guidelines.

We are committed to recognising our children’s good behaviour and achievements and celebrate their success at our weekly assemblies. All the pupils belong to a House. We have strong links with the community.

The main building which dates back to 1873 and has four class bases. There is a Head Teacher's office and secretarial office, a medical room, a staff room and a general-purpose hall used for dining, P.E., assemblies, etc. The general-purpose hall has limited space but we also make use of the Public Hall in the village for P.E. and various school events

The children’s toilet facilities were upgraded over the summer of 2022 and provide very modern facilities.

The school also has hut accommodation. Currently, the Medway hut is used to accommodate Primary 1/2 pupils while the Nursery use the hut at the front of the school.

The grounds include a tarmac playground with picnic and seated areas. There is also an extensive playing field to the rear of the school, which we make a lot of use of during the summer months. We have developed our field into our own woodland and wildlife garden and orchard. We also have a large polytunnel which is used by the whole school to cultivate fruit and vegetables during the year. Our Eco Committee and Pupil Council as well as parents are very much involved in the development of our outdoor areas.

School Uniform

The school uniform is navy sweatshirts and jade polo shirts embroidered with the school logo. A small stock is kept in school.

We encourage all our children to dress smartly in school uniform in our school colours of navy and jade.

Boys - jade polo shirt, navy sweatshirt/jumper, grey or black trousers.

Girls – jade polo shirt, navy sweatshirt/jumper/cardigan, grey or black skirt/pinafore/trousers.

We encourage pupils to wear school colours for PE.
